Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1850. She attended an all female catholic school from kindergarten until she was 18. Once she married Oscar, they moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1870 and had six children in the following 9 years. In 1882, three years after their last child was born, Oscar died from malaria.
Kate moved her family back to St. Louis 2 years later where she started writing and publishing music and poems. Once she turned to fiction, she published 100 short stories, 3 novels, and a play within 12 years. She passed away in 1904 from a sudden hemorrhage, but her novel didn't start getting the credit it deserved until the 1960's/70's when the feminist movement started. Fun Fact: Kate vacationed at Grand Isle with her husband much like Edna in The Awakening with hers.
